The latest installment of the Deep House Archives comes, as per the blog's traditions, right before the official start of the summer season. "Better Days", mixed by Theo Zanos, is filled with the latest offerings of the nu disco genre, a style featured almost a year ago in this blog with the 24th DHA volume. Although nu disco has been receiving increased attention lately, several artists managed to retain the originality and freshness of their sound until now and this mix provides a testament to their creative abilities. Named after the legendary NYC club, where the late Loleatta Holloway performed the "My Loleatta" acapella featured in the mix, the new DHA update provides the right soundtrack to welcome those better days ahead.

DHA welcomes the new year in it's usual late fashion, but makes up for the wait with a double offering, a first of hopefully many. First off, the 29th volume of the podcast, "Static Vamp", mixed by Theo Zanos. The new mix dives into the sophisticated rhythm programming and loop sequencing of funky and tech house, in a blend that makes both styles almost indistinguishable. The new breed of talented producers of this emerging genre, provides a plethora of songs, perfect for a musical journey that won't leave anyone standing still.

The second offering, in soundcloud format only, is a live recording from our weekly Friday residency @ Suite 701, at Montreal, Quebec. The portion of the set, recorded on 14th of January features cutting edge deep and tech house. Deep House Archives Vol. 24 - Voyage of Discovery

It has been way too long since the DHA blog was updated, but we hope this update will make up for all this time. The Deep House Archives podcast celebrates it's 3rd anniversary since it's revival, with a mix that deviates from the usual DHA style, but stays true to the spirit of constant search for new sounds, fusions and ideas in contemporary electronic dance music. Voyage of Discovery, mixed by Theo Zanos, explores the nu-disco genre and the incorporation of deep house elements, creating a style that is not limited to re-edits of original-era disco songs but serves as a full-fledged continuum of the 70s space and 80s italo disco. Named after the pilot episode of Canadian-produced, early 70s sci-fi tv series Starlost, but also a very fitting wordplay, the latest DHA issue might have lower BPMs than usual, but won't have any problems operating in the dance floor realm. Special thanks go to Allard One, who provided the photo art for this mix.

As we mentioned earlier, this update serves also as a (belated) 3rd year anniversary issue of the Deep House Archives podcast. Revived in March of 2007, the blog has served it's mixes to more than 25k unique visitors and quickly became one of the most popular deep house podcasts. The 24 sets featured 360 different songs (no song has been featured twice in this blog). Most popular labels in here are Plastic City (18) and Nitegrooves (11), while most popular artists are Ananda Project (6), Timewriter (5) and Nick Holder (5). Throughout these years, the blog has received overwhelming positive response, both from old faithfuls as well as new listeners. To all, a warm thank you for your kind words.

The last DHA mix for 2007 moves in a rather festive mood, for many reasons.

2007 was the year of DHA revival through this blog site and the editors of DHA are very pleased from the overwhelming feedback from all DHA fans, the same feedback that kept us going since 1999 when DHA first started. Downloaded by thousands (and streamed by even more) listeners, the DHA mixes/podcasts will continue stronger than ever, and hopefully, starting with 2008, we'll start posting new and old mixes from Steve.

This DHA mix also celebrates the birth of "Groove Kitty" nights, a new series of nights in Los Angeles, hosted by our own Theo Zanos and Christos K (Kapa Music, djceekay.com). Groove Kitty outlines an entire philosophy in nightlife, inspired by the club and bar culture in cities like London, New York, Milan, Athens, Barcelona, Cape Town. Soulful, glam, classy, refined, eclectic, chic, sophisticated, while retaining an underground feel. A night to educate the uninitiated and delight the discerning. Groove Kitty Uno, mixed by Theo Zanos, features cutting edge deep house and sets the tone for what we hope to become a new underground trend in LA nightlife.

Deep House Archives Vol. 12 - Disco Demolition Night

We conclude the revival of the old DHA mixes from Theo Zanos with Disco Demolition Night. Here's the description of the set, as featured in the first Deep House Archives website in January of 2003.

Disco Demolition Night, held at 1979 was maybe the biggest backlash in the history of Disco. Local radio DJ Steve Dahl (Loop FM) organized this anti-disco rally at Comiskey Park in Chicago, which eventually turned into a riot, portraying racial prejudice against black music in general.

This issue of DHA will try to bring back the elements of Disco that made this style of music an underground musical phenomenon and the biggest influence in contemporary dance music. Tracks that escape the mainstream "Saturday Night Fever" disco, it's mostly intensive, massive Disco grooves of anthemic proportions, many of them big hits in underground clubs like Paradise Garage, NY and Warehouse, Chicago, and played from pioneering DJs like Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles and David Mancuso.

Continuing the reviving of old mixes from the first Deep House Archives website, we offer "Sound, Forms & Colors" by Theo Z. This time instead of a blunt description of the mix, we'll repost the description of the set, back in may of 2001 (oddly enough it also holds today).

During the last years we have all witnessed a vast growth of the 'deep house' scene; releases, producers & djs have proliferated at a hard-to-follow rate. This overproduction frenzy may seem to many like a trench knife, since enough of the 'deep stuff' that comes out today lacks soul and originality. Nevertheless, certain producers and labels still push back the boundaries of this style of music and keep the deep vibe alive. This month's mix focuses on releases that have made a statement towards this direction; swinging between tough beats and mellow chords, and moving from uplifting to moody melodies, the last issue of DHA works well on the Saturday late-night crowd...and provides a nice background for the Sunday coffee talk.
